BREAKING THE SILENCE: UNITED AGAINST FEMICIDE IN KENYA
In the heart of Nairobi, a city vibrant with life and resilience, a shadow has loomed over our sisters, mothers, and daughters. As the co-founder of EmpowerHer Life Foundation, I have stood alongside countless women and girls, raising our voices against the harrowing surge of femicide in Kenya. Over the past 16 days, our activism has been a testament to our collective strength and an unyielding demand for justice.
Recent statistics paint a grim picture: between August and October 2024, at least 97 women have been brutally murdered, their lives cut short by gender-based violence.
This alarming trend has only intensified, with reports indicating that Kenya experiences one of the highest rates of femicide in Africa, with an estimated 47 women killed each week.
These numbers are not mere data points; they represent the lives of women like Rebecca Cheptegei, an Olympic marathon runner whose promising future was extinguished by a violent ex-partner.
Her story, along with many others, underscores the pervasive and lethal nature of gender-based violence in our society.
Our recent protests, though met with resistance and even teargas, have been a powerful demonstration of solidarity and a clarion call for action.
Women and girls have marched not only in Nairobi but also in cities like Mombasa and Lodwar, united one goal and demand for an end to these atrocities. The arrests of activists, including prominent figures like Irungu Houghton of Amnesty International Kenya, highlight the challenges we face, but they also strengthen our resolve.
The root causes of femicide are deeply embedded in societal structures that perpetuate patriarchy and misogyny. Despite existing legal frameworks intended to protect women, enforcement remains lax, and cultural attitudes often dismiss or trivialize the severity of these crimes. This systemic failure not only endangers women but also erodes the moral fabric of our nation.
At EmpowerHer Life Foundation, we are committed to transforming this narrative. Our initiatives focus on empowering women and girls through education, economic opportunities, and advocacy. We believe that by uplifting women, we uplift entire communities. However, our efforts require the support of policymakers, law enforcement, and every Kenyan citizen.
We call upon the government to take decisive action:
- Recognize femicide as a distinct and punishable crime: This acknowledgment is crucial for the development of targeted legal frameworks and deterrent measures.
- Implement and enforce existing laws: Ensure that protective measures are not just theoretical but actively upheld, providing real security for women and girls.
- Invest in public awareness campaigns: Challenge and change the societal norms that perpetuate gender-based violence, fostering a culture of respect and equality.
To our readers, supporters, and every individual who envisions a just and equitable Kenya: your voice matters. Stand with us in this fight. Advocate for change in your communities, support survivors, and hold our leaders accountable. Together, we can dismantle the structures that allow femicide to persist.
In the words of the late Wangari Maathai, “It’s the little things citizens do. That’s what will make the difference. My little thing is planting trees.” Our ‘little thing’ is raising our voices, marching in solidarity, and refusing to accept a reality where women live in fear. Let us plant the seeds of change today, so that future generations may live in a world free from the scourge of femicide.
Together, we are powerful. Together, we are unstoppable. Together, we will end femicide in Kenya.
